چکیده

We study passive and nonlinear targeted energy transfers induced by resonant interactions between a singledegree-of-freedom nonlinear energy sink (NES) and a 2-DOF in-flow rigid wing model. We show that it is feasible to partially or even completely suppress aeroelastic instability by passively transferring vibration energy from thewing to the NES in a one-way irreversible fashion. Moreover, this instability suppression is performed by partially or completely eliminating its triggering mechanism. Numerical parametric studies identify three main mechanisms for suppressing aeroelastic instability: recurring burstout and suppression, intermediate suppression, and complete elimination. We investigate thesemechanisms both numerically by theHilbert–Huang transformand analytically by a complexification-averaging technique. Each suppressionmechanism involves strong 1:1 resonance capture during which the NES absorbs and dissipates a significant portion of energy fed from the flow to the wing. Failure of suppression is associated with restoring the underlying triggering mechanism of instability, which is a series of superharmonic resonance captures followed by escapes from resonance. Finally, using a numerical continuation technique, we perform a bifurcation analysis to examine sensitive dependence on initial conditions and thus robustness of instability suppression.

Passive Suppression of Aeroelastic Instabilities of In-flowwings by Targeted Energy Transfers to Lightweight Essentially Nonlinear Attachments

Abstract. Theoretical and experimental suppression of aeroelastic instabilities by means of broadband passive targeted energy transfers has been recently studied. A single-degree-offreedom (SDOF) nonlinear energy sink (NES) was coupled to a 2-DOF rigid wing modeled in the low-speed, subsonic regime with quasi-steady aerodynamic theory. The nonlinear attachment was designed and optimized to supp...

A Continuous Approach to the Aeroelastic Stability of Suspended Cables in 1 : 2 Internal Resonance

This paper proposes a continuous perturbation treatment of the nonlinear equations of a cable, which is characterized by possible aeroelastic instability and internal resonance conditions. The objective is to evaluate the influence of stable modes (called passive) usually ignored when discretizing the model. The first step concerns the description of the structural equilibrium path under the ac...

Evaluation of 2-D Aeroelastic Models Based on Indicial Aerodynamic Theory and Vortex Lattice Method in Flutter and Gust Response Determination

Two 2-D aeroelastic models are presented here to determine instability boundary (flutter speed) and gust response of a typical section airfoil with degrees of freedom in pitch and plunge directions. To build these 2-D aeroelastic models, two different aerodynamic theories including Indicial Aerodynamic Theory and Vortex Lattice Method (VLM) have been employed. Also, a 3-D aeroelastic framework ...

Determination of Dynamic Instability Speed of an Unsweep Wing in Subsonic Flow Including Compressibility Effects

In this paper, the equation of motion of an elastic 2 DoF wing model has been derived using Lagrange's method. The aerodynamic loads on the wing were calculated via the Strip-Theory and the effect of compressibility was included. Wing deflections due to bending and twist motions were determined using the Assume-Mode method. The aeroelastic equations were solved numerically using the V-g method....
